Title
Medieval Bar Mount
Description
English: An incomplete and corroded Medieval copper-alloy bar mount probably for a box or casket (c. 1200-c. 1500).

This mount is convex at the front and flat at the rear. It is missing one terminal due to a transverse break. The object comprises a rectangular plate or bar that is roughly 'D'-shaped in cross-section. The terminal at the complete end has a copper-alloy rivet and an elongated knop. The rivet has a sub-oval copper-alloy rove. About mid-way along the length of the mount there is a double sub-circular expansion with a raised border.

This mount is purplish brown with green copper-alloy corrosion products. Flecks of gilding can be seen on the front of the mount.

Length: 58.1mm; width: 10.3mm; thickness: 3.0mm; thickness including rivet: 6.8mm. Weight: 8.46g.

Similar mounts have been published (Egan 1998: 69-81; Read 2001: 23-24).
