Title
Medieval - Post Medieval single looped buckle (front and back views)
Description
English: An incomplete cast copper alloy single looped buckle, dating from the Medieval – Post Medieval period, between AD 1500 – 1650 (length: 45.5mm; width: 53.5mm; thickness: 2mm; weight: 10.7g).

This single looped buckle frame is sub-rectangular in plan and mostly flat in section. The artefact terminates in a pointed tip in the centre along the outside edge with a protruding double-lobed decoration also halfway down the buckle frame’s length along the outside edge. The strap bar on the opposing side from the pointed tip is narrowed. The pin (probably made of cast copper alloy) is completely missing but it would have originally stretched from the strap bar across to rest on the pointed tip. The back of the artefact is flat and undecorated. Overall, the buckle frame is in a worn but fair condition with a dark green patina. Additionally, the artefact also appears to have been mended at one of the double-lobed protrusions with glue.

Similar examples are illustrated in Whitehead, R, 1996, ‘Buckles 1250 – 1800’, page 28, ref nos 147 & 149.
