Title
Medieval : Strap end
Description
English: A copper-alloy strap-end buckle with hollow end (also known as a ‘box chape’).

Two copper alloy rivets remain in situ in the open end. The box chape has been cast as one piece along with the strap attachment. The chape has a flat front plate and a flat back plate. The edges are rounded and taper down from the open end to the strap fitting. The front plate has been decorated with ‘black’ lettering. The front plate is so worn that it is difficult to see which letter/letters are represented. It may be a clumsy attempt at a letter M. Traces of gilding, tinning or silvering survive on this surface. At the other end of the box chape the strap fitting has been attached via a ‘waisted’ area. Attached to this waisted area are the beginnings of what appears to be a buckle frame. The buckle has broken off and the breaks look very worn. A worn-though pin recess remains, but no pin is present. The reverse is undecorated.

The metal is a mid greyish-green colour. These buckles, sometimes called ‘lyre-shaped’, date to the 15th century. A number of similar buckle have been recorded onto the database see related finds below.
