Title
Medieval : Papal bulla
Description
English: A cast lead Papal bulla. The obverse depicts the heads of St. Paul and St. Peter), with a cross between them. The two heads are each surrounded by a circle of pellets. The legend above the busts reads SPASPE. The reverse depicts the name of the Pope. The legend reads IO // h'INNES // PP: XXI (written on three lines, as indicated). This name refers to John XXI (1276 - 1277). The lead has gone a mid whitish-grey colour. The ribbon holes have been filled with lead corrosion and soil, so are no longer visible as holes.

Papal bullae are lead seals which were attached to documents known as bulls, issued by the Papacy.
