Title
Medieval : Papal bulla
Description
English: A cast lead Papal bulla.

Papal bullae are lead seals which were attached to documents known as bulls, issued by the Papacy. The bulla appears to have been deliberately cut in half; only one half remains.

The obverse depicts the head of St. Paul (which would have faced the head of St. Peter), with a sceptre between them. The two heads are each surrounded by a circle of pellets. The legend above the busts reads SPAS[PE].

The reverse depicts the name of the Pope. The legend reads [I]OhA// [N]NES// [PP]XXII (written on three lines). This name refers to Pope John XXII (1316-1334).

The papal bulla is roughly circular in shape measuring 35.72mm diameter. The edges of the papal bulla have been damaged, this damage looks worn. The lead has gone a mid whitish-grey colour.
