Title
Medieval : Padlock
Description
English: A complete copper alloy barb spring padlock of medieval date. The lock is comprised of an elongated hollow case which is hexagonal in section with an integral, projecting hasp to one end. The hasp is flat and rectangular, projecting out at a 90 degree angle from the case. An integrally cast cylindrical bar extends from the top of the hasp projecting with a downward angle to come close to the top of the opposite end of the case. The keyhole, at the same end as the hasp, has a sub-ovate aperture while, at the opposite end, the spring holes are formed of two smaller sub-ovate perforations with central vertical bar.

The metal has a dark greenish-brown patina and is worn. The lock is 45.6mm long, 24.6mm wide and 3.4mm thick at the hasp, 10.6mm in diameter at the case and weighs 12.7g.

This padlock would have had a barb-spring mechanism opened by a barrel padlock key and its size may indicate use on a casket or chest.

Numerous similar examples have been recorded on the PAS database, for examples see: LEIC-B39FE6, LVPL-D91832 and SF-9C3B66.
