Title |
Medieval : Padlock |
||
Description |
English: An incomplete Medieval cast copper alloy barrel padlock, 12th-14th centuries AD. The padlock has an octagonal-sectioned barrel case, about 60% of which remains intact. At the complete end of the barrel case, an arm projects outwards, with a central drilled hole. The padlock bar would have projected from this arm but has broken off. One of the facets of the octagonal barrel has been decorated along its length with an incised waving line and pellets. The copper alloy has acquired a very dark olive-green patina, and the incised areas contain some pale concretion. The padlock measures 29.8mm long, 21.1mm wide and 9.4mm thick. It weighs 9.1 grams. A similar example is illustrated in Egan (1998), p. 96 ref. 250, although the barrel in this case is undecorated. |
