Title
Medieval : Needle case
Description
English: A complete and elaborate copper alloy needle case dating to between the medieval period. The case consists of a single rolled sheet of copper alloy with a pinched together lower terminal. The sheet has been cut at the pinched terminal on four lines, forming four flaps, these allow the terminal to be pinched and neatly folded in. The joints have then been soldered to prevent the contents of the case (needles) from falling out. The case has then been decorated with incised lines after being assembled. The top of the case has a incised band running round the circumference with vertical incised hatching lines as further decoration. The main body of the case is decorated with two sets of incised parallel lines with incised lines in between. These two bands spiral around the case from top to base. In-between these two bands are vertically incised lines which appear to mimic the surface of wood or bone. The surface of the alloy is dark jade-green with a fairly glossy surface. The case is missing the cap. This needle case dates between 1150 and 1450 AD. See: Egan and Pritchard, p384 for a more detailed discussion on this type of object.
