Title
Medieval : Harness pendant
Description
English: A very fine cast copper alloy shield-shaped harness pendant with considerable remnants of enamelling surviving on the surface.

The pendant consists of a shield shaped plate of copper-alloy, with the suspension loop still attached. The loop is intact and sits proud of the pendant. A fragment of the iron pin, used to suspend it is still evident inside the loop. The non-enamelled surface of the pendant is heavily corroded, therefore resulting in the lose of much of the the original surface. The enamel is all red (gules). The design is set within a border, with a cross flory in the centre. Each arm of the cross terminates with fleur-de-lys. The cross is seen at a depression within the raised enamel. No gilding survives.

Mrs Irene Szymanski has done a considerable amount of research on this pendant and believes that the pendant can be assigned to the Latimer family. More information is available on request and is held within the Jim Halliday Archive at the Yorkshire Musuem.

This type of harness pendant date to the medieval period and are circa late 13th – early 14th century in date.
