Title |
Medieval (probably) eather or ceramic punch impression |
||
Description |
English: Cast copper alloy punch. Copper alloy rod with one end moulded and inscribed into a quatrefoil design. Circular sectioned rod, perforated for suspension at one end (there are wear marks on the upper edge of the circular perforation, indicating the object had been hung), and expanding slightly towards the other end where the rod becomes quatrefoil in section (with grooves defining the lobes), and the base is decorated with a central cross within a diamond shape. Very little of the fine mid green original surface survives; mid-light green exposed surface. Length 91.4mm, width 7.0mm, thickness 6.8mm, weight 20.55g
Uncertain date. Presumably this could have been used for decorating leather, pottery (e.g. the stamps on Anglo-Saxon vessels), or thin sheet metal, e.g. gold or silver. There is no splaying of the perforated end, indicating that this has not been often hit with force. There also seems to be little, if no wear on the decorative end. This seems to suggest it was used on a soft material such as leather or pottery. Probably Medieval? |
