Title
Medieval (AD 1200-1500) copper alloy padlock
Description
English: Incomplete cast medieval copper alloy zoomorphic barrel padlock, dating 12th to 15th Century.

The lock represents a horse but is still broadly rectangular in plan and circular in cross section to allow the case to encase the now missing iron locking mechanism. It has a hollow cylindrical body, with the three remaining legs positioned at each corner, the right front leg is missing. It has decoration on its body representing harness, this is formed by a raised oval motif. It has a circular sectioned neck with incised lines either side implying the mane; with a stylised triangular head. There is a rectangular hole at the front of the face, which aligns with a damaged rectangular hole at the back of the head. The hind end is flat and open, with bars forming a rectangular hole (3.7mm) and two rectangular holes, now joined.

There is historical damage at the front of the chest where the right front leg was, leaving a ragged hole.

Measurements: Height:34.76mm, length: 42.74mm, width:13.89mm, weight: 17.79g.
