Title
Medieval 'lyre shaped' buckle.
Description
English: Cast copper alloy 'lyre shaped buckle' from the medieval period.

The plate is a hollow box shape, sub-rectangular in plan. The frame is missing as is the pin. The plate is widest at the base. There are 2 rivets holes close to the base of the plate. The front of the plate is decorated with a letter, a large N. the back of the palte is plain. Above the letter there is a moulded collar and then the plate narrows before widening again where the frame starts. At the top of the plate the start of the frame can be seen but it has broken after only a few millimetres. What remains are the base of 4 projections.

Similar examples can be seen in Reads book on p.60/61, nos. 265, 266 (1995). This type of buckle dates from the end of the 14th century to the first quarter of the 15th century.
