Title |
Medieval 'animalier' candle holder |
||
Description |
English: Cast copper alloy candle holder in the shape of a standing dog. The dog is complete and is standing on a circular base which is hollow in the centre. In its back is a circular hole to take a separate candle-holder socket. The dog has a height of 39mm, has a collar around its neck and a short tail.
Animal form candle holders were in vogue in the Late Medieval period. One in the shape of a stag was found in London in a context of c.1270-1350 (Egan; 1998; 147-8); also see NARC-6F6352, BERK-3F1C48, GLO-073671, NMGW-E6C122, HAMP2802, YORYM-395444, which are all very similar. A medieval date seems most likely, but it should be borne in mind that Roman items similar to this one have been discovered in England, a pewter candlestick depicting a stag from Bath and also a sceptre terminal with a dog from Caister on Sea (Darling and Gurney 1993, 130 no. 794, 132 fig 114). The dog on the sceptre terminal is very similar in the design and style of the dog to this find, but lacks the central perforation and thick collar, and has a bushy downward-pointing tail. It stands on a rectangular, not circular, plinth. The stag candlestick is not much different from the Medieval example found in London. There is therefore no well-dated parallel to this group of socketed zoomorphic objects and although they are currently recorded as medieval, it is also possible that they may be Roman. |
