Title
Medieval. Plain annular or ring brooch
Description
English: An incomplete, Medieval C13-15th, cast, copper alloy, medium size ring or annular brooch but minus the pin. Plain, relatively wide frame of circular cross-section with a narrowed restriction for the missing pin to wrap around but no opposite corresponding lug smaller pin notch. This base metal type would have been used on garments possibly woollen of the lower classes rather than nobility, possibly worn at the neck for fastening the undergarment. Slightly irregular matt pale green corroded surface with a few small patches of verdigris. This is likely to date to 1200-1499. Ref. Detector Finds, Gordon Bailey, Greenlight Publishing 1992, page 47-51 No. 19, 23 & 59, History Beneath Our Feet, Brian Read, Anglia Publishing Ipswich 1995, page 70-71 No. 404 and Dress Accessories, Medieval Finds from excavations in London 1150-1450, Geoff Egan and Frances Pritchard, London HMSO, page 248-254 No. 1307. The brooch is 25.74mm long, 25.31mm wide, 3.51mm thick, diameter 25.74mm and weighs 3.9g.
