Title
Medieval. Heraldic mount. Front & back views
Description
English: An incomplete, medieval, cast, copper alloy, trefoil shaped probable heraldic mount/plaque, possibly of continental origin. This could have been used on armour or as a harness fitting. The mount is trefoil in shape, once gilded, the central panel has an inscribed dragon with open wings above a blue enamelled scroll which appears to read 'TIOD:AI:Ment'. This is surrounded by a separate, substantial, rounded, heavily gilded border with a beaded inner edge which is broken with about a third missing. The back has a folded over narrow, rectagular shaped retaining clip to hold the central panel in place. There are rusty remnants on the back of the panel, as though it was attached to sheet plate iron as in armour. There is some surface corrosion. This mount is likely to date to 14th - 15th century.

The mount is 71mm long, 65.2mm wide, 7.3mm thick, diameter 71mm and weighs 46.6g.

It can be compared with a plaque and frame recorded on this database - BERK-F58E08. The record quoted contains useful references.
