Title |
Medieval/post-medieval rectangular double-looped buckle |
||
Description |
English: A cast copper-alloy double-looped buckle of late medieval to early post-medieval date. The loops are broadly rectangular in form and are asymmetrical; the apertures are of varying widths. On the side with the larger hole are three transverse grooves in a central position which probably acted as a pin rest. This side is slightly thicker than the other. On the other side of the pin bar the hole is narrower, but the outer edge is very wide (W.: 9.2mm). It features longitudinal grooves to each side; the extreme external edge is decorated with diagonal grooves giving a ropework effect. On its upper surface the buckle is largely bevelled both internally and externally. The lower surface is flat with the exception of the outer side of the narrower outer edge which is shallowly curved. Viewed in profile it can be seen that one of the sides has been bent upwards. Further ?damage has occurred to the thicker side which curves inwards towards the pin bar. There is some orange iron staining from the (missing) pin on the pin bar. The metal has a mid/dark-green colour, with numerous file marks, particularly to the lower surface of the wide outer edge. This, the form and decoration, suggest the date range offered above; for a similar buckle see ref. HAMP-8042C8 on this database. |
