Title
Medieval: Single loop rectangular buckle
Description
English: An incomplete copper alloy buckle of Medieval dating (AD 1250 to AD 1400).

Both the buckle frame and the pin are complete, whereas the buckle plate is incomplete.

The buckle frame consists of a sub rectangular frame, with an expanded outside edge, with three tranverse grooves located centrally to act as a pin rest. Tranverse ridges are present along the edges, as decoration, next to either end. A V shaped groove is present on the reverse of the buckle on the outside edge. The strap bar has been narrowed for the strap plate to be wrapped around.

The pin consists of a D sectioned piece of copper alloy, with a moulded transverse ridge towards the end of the pin. The pin has been wrapped around the strap bar. The pin tapers to a blunt point.

Only a small proportion of the buckle plate is present, and consists of a piece of sheet copper alloy metal, wrapped around the central bar. A rectangular slot has been cut for the pin and the edges of the plate have been recessed for the frame. The buckle plate is 0.68 mm thick.

The complete buckle measures 22.31 mm in length, 13.27 mm wide and 4.66 mm thick in total. It weighs 2.6 g. The buckle frame measures 15.16 mm in length, 13.27 mm wide and 3.62 mm thick. The pin measures 14.19 mm in length, 3.23 mm wide and 4.66 mm thick. The buckle plate measures 10.41 mm long, 10.66 mm wide and 0.68 mm thick.

The buckle is a dark green colour, with an even surface patina.

Single loop rectangular buckle frames like this example are a frequently occurring find and considered to be Medieval in dating (AD 1250 to AD 1400).
