Title
Medieval: Lyre-shaped strap end
Description
English: A medieval cast copper alloy strap end of 'lyre-shaped' form which consists of a pair of curving arms which emerge from a box. What survives is the attachment end which comprises a tapering box with two rivets for securing the strap, and parts of the arms. The box is decorated with an engraved cross or saltire with pointed terminals, reserved within a field of zigzags. Between the truncated curving arms of the strap end is a bird with out-stretched wings. Strap ends such as this date to the 15th century.
