Title
Medieval: Hook
Description
English: A complete, copper alloy medieval to post medieval type one havett dating to AD 1500-1650.

The bar of the object is bent and has two hooks, both of which bend inwards at 45 degrees. What could be potentially the top end of the object begins to taper outwards from its fine hooked end. These widened edges remain parallel to each other, even when the edges taper inwards to the rest of the object. Unusually, there seems to be know zig zigged area which would have been originally used for wire grip (Read 2008), but the wider area of the main body of the object could have been used for this purpose.

Overall, the havett is 66.36m in length, 4.94mm in maximum width, 2.73mm in thickness and it weighs 3.75g.

This find comes under other terms "havette", "habick" "harbick" or a "Shearmens hook" (Read 2008). This hooked clasp would have been utilised by fullers (shearmens) in the making and nap removal on newly woven clothes. One hook would have pierced the selvedge (newly woven edge of cloth). The cloth would have then been held taunt by the other hook into a padded cropping board (Read 2008). Overall, there are two classes and two types of this object. The physical finds falls under Class A, type 1 as the havette grip is rectangular in shape and is bar in shape, rather than a more elaborate design.

A good comparison of this object can be found in "Hooked-clasps and eyes. A classification and Catalogue of Sharp- or Blunt-Hooked Clasps and Miscellaneous Hooks, Eyes, Loops, Rings and Toggles", page 204-205 Nos. 738-743.
