Title
Medieval: Asymmetrical buckle
Description
English: A cast copper alloy asymmetrical buckle, of Medieval dating (c.1350 -1450).

The buckle consists of an oval loop with attached rectangular strap bar. It is rectangular in cross section. The front part of the buckle is oval in plan, with a D-shaped cross section. A pin notch / rest is present at the centre of the outer edge. The inner edge is expanded slightly, with a constriction in the centre for the pin. The pin consists of a strip of copper alloy wrapped around the central bar. The pin is mostly complete, but it has been bent out of its original shape, and the tip is no longer present. Attached to the back of the central bar is a rectangular loop, where the original strap would have been attached. The frame of the rectangular loop is D shaped in cross section.

The buckle frame measures 24.86mm in length, 25.08mm wide and 5.93mm thick. It weighs 5.3 grams.

It is a dark grey green colour with a slightly abraded patina. The patina has been abraded by movement in the ploughsoil. The buckle has been coated with an oil like substance, presumably for conservation reasons.

There are plenty of comparative examples of this type of buckle frame around. One was recorded from excavations in London (Egan and Pritchard, 1991, pp 103, #472) and was dated to c.1400 - c. 1450. One was published by Whitehead (2003, pp87, #540), and is of similar date (c. 1350 - c. 1450). Several other examples are present on the PAS database including YORYM-40FF15, SWYOR-E9ACC3 and NMS-2EFDC2.
