ts not involuntary. Urina-tion is involuntary. She has lost much weight. Of late night crieshave been frequent, sharp, and piercing. Physical examination on admission, September 6, showed apoorly nourished, pale child. When not disturbed she lay quietly,respiration was regular, not rapid, no cyanosis. When disturbedshe would cry out. Did not seem to understand when spoken to. Pupils were equal, slightly dilated, and reacted only sluggishlyto light. Child was apparently totally blind. Examination of the fundus showed tortuous vessels, a few hem-orrhages, and double optic atrophy. Neck stiff and slight retraction of the head—movement caused asharp cry. Mouth, pharynx, and ears negative. Lymph Nodes.—Right inguinal slightly enlarged. Heart.—Apex impulse in fourth space, 2 in. to left of midsternalline. Sounds are loud—booming and regular—no murmurs—basalsounds strong and sharp. Pulse regular and good force—normal rate. Pig. XIII. Case of increased intraventricular pressure.

INCREASED INTRAVENTRICULAR PRESSURE 177 Lungs.—A few scattered subcrepitant and occasional coarserales over both chests, especially posteriorly—no change in voice orbreathing. Abdomen.—Sunken—soft—no masses felt. Liver and spleen not made out. Extremities.—Left arm held close to body with forearm flexed,and quite rigid. Left index finger in marked hyperextension—rigid—other fingerssemiflexed and slightly rigid. Left thigh flexed, adducted—rigid; leg flexed on thigh; footinverted, with marked extension of great toe. Other toes stiff.Proximal phalanges flexed—distal extended. Right arm and leg show no evidence of paralysis or spasticity. Reflexes.—Knee jerks exaggerated. Marked Kernig on left side—none on right. Spine. — Held moderately stiff — examination unsatisfactory. There does not seem to be any change in sensation. Von Pirquet Reaction.—Very strongly positive. Blood.—Haemoglobin, 64 per cent. L
