menstruated. Her present illness dated back two weeks, her history mentioningmalaise, pains and tenderness in knees, ankles, and shoulders. Thesewere rather indefinite and had largely passed away at time of entrance,leaving no result. She was fairly nourished, pale, and the superficial glands of axiUaeand groins were enlarged. Her symptoms were connected with the heart and lungs, pericar-ditis and bronchitis, also some pains and stiffness of joints. Her phy-sician sending her to hospital beheved she was developingtyphoid fever. The patient gradually emerged from this indefinite mixture of signsand symptoms which indirectly pointed to a general poor condition, andapparently began to grow. It was estimated that she grew severalinches while in hospital. Such was the testimony of her clothingand the estimate of her parents. LINE^ ATROPHIC/E. 6l After one month in hospital and in bed, there were noticed on theinner aspect of her left knee two parallel lineae atrophica over the lowerfemoral extremity, running transversely to the axis of the long boneat the juncture of shaft and epiphysis. These lines were similar tothose of the skin over the rapidly enlarging abdomen of the pregnantwoman. They were dark purplish-red, and in contrast to the skinfavorable to photographing. (See illustration.) The linage atrophica^ multipHed in number, the lines being similarin character, symmetrical on the inner surfaces of the two knees. The father, noting the interest taken in the lesion, volunteered theinformation that he had similar lines on his own knees. This provedto be the fact, the lines being similar in all respects save that his, beingold, were no longer purplish, but had become porcelain-white.
