From this comparison it results that the characters de-tailed by Cuvier as separating the African from the Ame-rican Lamantin, do not apply to those of North America ;and we are made acquainted with the interesting fact, ofthe existence of two species of Manati on the coast ofNorth and South America. However, should furtherinvestigation and examination of the living animal fromFlorida, prove it possessed of some external characterssufficient to render it specifically distinct from the *&-negalensis then this species will require to be designatedby an appropriate name, in order to distinguish it fromthe other Lamantins hitherto described ; and as the snoutof the former appears to be wider below the eyes, thanin both the latter, we propose that it shall be denominatedManatus latirostris, which distinction, though useful tonaturalists in general, would
