Missouriensis) must be arrang-ed as an extinct genus altogether new, characterized, more particularly, in thefragment in question, by the extreme length, breadth, and projection of the inter-maxillary bone, in which it presents a marked difference from any species of thegenus Ichthyosaurus, and approaches, in a slight degree, animals of the Batrachianorder. BASILOSAURUS OF ALABAMA. 349 Description of the remains of the (iBasilosaurus alarge fossil marine animal, recently discovered in thehorizontal limestone of Jllabama. In the Transactions of the American Philosophical So-ciety for 1834, will be found the description of an enor-mous fossil vertebra, presented to the Society by JudgeBree, from the i( marly banks of the Washita river,Arkansa territory. We there ventured to refer this bone tothe vertebra of a large extinct Saurian, of a nondescriptgenus, and proposed to name the animal provisionally Basilosaurus. Accompanying this vertebra, was a mass of the matrixwhich enveloped the fossil, and contained fossil shells, which Mr. Conrad referred to the genus Corbula, and toa species found plentifully in the Alabama tertiary depo-sits. Regarding our opinion then expressed, as to thegeological age of this marly deposit, our subsequent infor-mation furnishes no fact either to confirm or to disprove it. In the course of last autumn, Mr. Conrad
