have nowarrived. Monuments have been discovered not afew, but of a peculiar nature, and offering a deplor-able want of variety. They are, firstly those rock,sculjDtures, with inscriptions in a hitherto undeci-phered language, which have been mentioned in apreceding volume*; secondly, a large number oftombs. Of these, some—like the tombs of the kingsof Lydia—are constructed im the primeval form ofhigh mounds or barrows, containing a good-sizedsepulchral chamber in solid masonry. The rest—andsuch are found in bewildering numbers in Lycia—are hewn in live rocks. These tombs are real worksof art, and unlike any others in the world, beingelaborate imitations of the dwellings of the living,which, as we can see from these reproductions, wereof wood, of well-joined timberwork. The tomb usuallyrepresents the front of a house—porch, pillars, door,windows, roof-gable—closely copying the joining,even the dovetailing of the timber and the protruding * See Story of Assyria, pp. 562-366.
