Forty thousand families cameback, and many of the old supporters of the Bourbons nowentered the service of the First Consul. The prison doors werethrown open. The past was forgotten and forgiven. There wereno longer to be parties; all were to be simply Frenchmen. Thesewise measures of amnesty did much towards restoring confidenceand bringing back internal peace and prosperity to France.
