Description |
English: Apulian red figured volute krater, attributed to The Underworld Painter, circa 330 - 310 BC Late Classical / Early Hellenistic From Canosa di Puglia, now in Munich, Staatliche Antikensammlungen. Detail showing Medea, dressed with typical oriental clothes (double chiton with embroidered sleeves of a different fabric, a himation and a tiara); Medea is grabbing by the hair one of her sons and is about to kill him on an altar (the other son is being rescued by a soldier, to the left). At the center is Medea’s grandfather, the god Helios, hauled by two snakes, bearing two flaming torches and glimpsing the murder’s scene. This is labelled ΟΙΣΤΡΟΣ meaning "frenzy" or "mania", perhaps a description of Medea's state. Rushing up from the right is Jason, bearded and holding spear and sword, but unable to stop Medea from slaying their son.
