Medal Commemorative of Gotse Delchev, issued in 1904 in Bulgaria, on behalf of the Internal Macedonian Revolutionary Organisation. Circular bronze medal with loop for ribbon suspension; The face with a head and shoulders portrait of Gotse Delchev facing right circumscribed; (The fearless macedonian apostle, Gotse Delchev, 1904); The reverse (see other versions) with, on the right, a seated female figure representative of Macedonia, her right arm raised in supplication, a broken chain hanging from her wrist, a shield bearing the arms of Macedonia to her left, and, to the left, a standing female figure representative of Bulgaria, a shield bearing the arms of Bulgaria held in her right hand, her left arm raised, holding a shield to protect ‘Macedonia’, signed Dimitar Diolev from Kalofer and circumscribed (Bulgaria preserve the freedom of Macedonia); ribbon lacking. The medal was issued by the IMRO in 1904 to commemorate its leader, Gotse Delchev (1872-1903), who had been killed in a skirmish with Ottoman Turkish police on 4 May 1903. |
