Gift of Hamish Mickle
Notes NZ Legion of Frontiersmen Long Service and Efficiency Medal (1955) Medal awarded to Arthur Cecil Douglas Flintoff Mickle, NZ Legion of Frontiersmen, membership number 18716, in 1955 Cecil Mickle joined the Legion in the 1920s (approximate date suggested by his membership number 18716). He was present at the funeral of Lieut. Sillitoe in 1930, and in 1955 was awarded the Legion’s Long Service Medal in 1955. This medal was awarded for 15 years’ service. Possible that the discrepancy between the date he joined the Legion and the date he received the award was because the medal was not introduced until 1944. NOTES- ""This Medal is the oldest medal of the NZ Command, and it predates the same award from the UK. It is believed to have been introduced between 1935 and 1940, and - were struck by Mayer and Kean up until 1954. Their name was stamped on the reverse of the medal, and were issued with a maroon ribbon not unlike that of the VC, and due to this confusion the ribbon was changed and a central green stripe was painted or woven on the ribbon. At some point in time Mayer and Kean lost the original dies for the medal and the new medals after 1954 were struck by the Taranaki Manufacturing Company in Stratford, NZ.""
