Notes (Pipe Band) medal that belonged to Jock Sutherland 6-560 2nd Lieut. Jock Sutherland, Canterbury Infantry Battalion John Sutherland, also known as Jock, was born in Dunedin on November 26, 1886, to David and Margaret Sutherland (nee Mitchell) and was living at Waimate when he enlisted as a private with the Canterbury Infantry Battalion soon after the outbreak of war. He left New Zealand on 6 October 1914 with the Main Body. By the end of the war Jock Sutherland had attained the rank of 2nd Lieutenant, and he married Helen Clifford, in Somerset on 1 January 1919, before his return to New Zealand. His son, Ross St Clair Sutherland served during WW2.
