Notes | Long Service and Good Conduct (Navy) Medal awarded to 271274 Alfred Victor Hanson, Engine Room Artificer 1, Royal Navy, HMS Philomel. Alfred Victor Hanson (1888-1948) Alfred Victor Hanson, born 24.5.1888 at Woolwich, England. Began service in Royal Navy on 4 January 1904 as a Boy Artificer working on the 'Fire Queen' and was discharged on 10 June 1945 with the rank of Engine Room Artificer serving on HMS Philomel. Hanson died in New Zealand in 1948. See Certificate of service with details of ships served on, wounds, etc (MS 135) In the Royal Navy, Engine Room Artificers were responsible for the maintenance and operation of mechanical plant. Many began, like Alfred Hanson ss a Boy Artificer, learning the skills of with the skills of fitters, turners or boilermakers, and rose through the ranks from 5th Class to become 1st or 2nd Class ERAs. | |||||||||||||||||||||||
