Notes | Distinguished Flying Cross, WW2 Decoration awarded to NZ40227 Flight Lieutenant Graham Wellesley Hamlin, 75 (NZ) Squadron, RAF - Born in Auckland in 1918 and educated at Nelson College, Graham Hamlin was a member of the Civil Reserve of Pilots and commenced his training early in 1940. He was granted his commission in July of that year and left for England a month later. He was posted to 75 (NZ) Squadron, Bomber Command, and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross in September 1941. Citation (as quoted in the Evening Post, Volume CXXXII, Issue 72, 22 September 1941, Page 8) “Pilot officer Hamlin always makes a point of running straight over his target area whatever the odds. His flights have been undertaken with clocklike precision, all kinds of weather, and often he has returned with his aircraft extensively damaged. The fearless and resolute manner in which Pilot Officer Hamlin has attacked his targets is worthy of highest praise.” Killed while on Active Service, 17 December 1942 (NZ), and buried at Purewa Cemetery, Auckland. | |||||||||||||||||||||||
