Notes Abuse of Neutral Flags, cast Bronze Medal, 1915, by Karl Goetz The inscription on this medal (The noble British ruler of the waves defends himself under neutral flags as is the practise of pirates) condemns British claims to neutrality at sea, and refers to the British Foreign Minister, Edward Grey, as sailing under the flags of neutral countries - Holland, Spain, Denmark, Italy and the United States. Medal designer, Karl Goetz was one of the most prolific medallists during World War One, and specialised in producing satirical medals which were used for propaganda purposes. The Lusitania medal became his most well-known medal, due to the British copy that was made as counter-propaganda.
