Notes | New Zealand Memorial Cross, WW2 Commemorating the death of 2nd Lieutenant Bruce Ingham Dent MC, Fiji Defence Force, New Zealand Infantry, Third Division, 2NZEF. 2nd Lieutenant Dent MC joined the army in November 1941 and left for Fiji in December 1942 where he helped train the 4th Battalion of the Fiji Infantry Regiment. Nine months later he received his commission and joined the 1st Battalion Fijian Infantry Regiment which was serving in the Solomon Islands. On December 21, 1943 the Battalion was moved to Bougainville where it was engaged in jungle warfare. Dent was killed in action on 25 March 1944, and awarded the Military Cross posthumously for “outstanding leadership during the Ibu campaign,” Bougainville. He is buried in New Caledonia at the Bourail New Zealand Cemetery. The New Zealand Memorial Cross is awarded to the next of kin of all New Zealand servicemen and women who were killed while on war service or operational service overseas, or who subsequently died of wounds received while on war service or operational service overseas, since the commencement of the Second World War. The King George VI cross is worn from a thin mauve coloured ribbon suspended around the neck, while the Queen Elizabeth II cross is worn as a brooch. The King George VI New Zealand Memorial Cross has been awarded to the families of the more than 11,000 personnel who died while serving in the New Zealand Armed Forces during the Second World War. The Cross was announced in the New Zealand Gazette on 12 September 1947 and was awarded to the next of kin of members of the New Zealand armed forces who had lost their lives on active service between 3 September 1939 and 2 September 1945 or subsequently as a result of wounds sustained during that period. It has since been extended to other later conflicts (Korea, Malaya, Vietnam and East Timor) in which New Zealand forces have been engaged. After the death of King George VI in 1952, the cross was replaced with a new version of similar design in brooch form bearing the cipher of Queen Elisabeth II.
