Vesey - Stewart - text of leaflet- Please do not destroy this - When you have read it carefully through kindly pass it on to a friend. - "With joyful pride we contemplate this latest deed - - Kolnische Volkszeitung, 10th May, 1915. - (line drawing illustrations showing both sides of medal) - This medal has been struck in Germany with the object of keeping alive in German hearts the recollection of the glorious achievement of the German Navy in deliberately destroying an unarmed passenger ship, together with 1,198 non-combatants, men, women and children. - On the obverse, under the legend "No contraband" (Keine Bannware) there is a representation of the Lusitania sinking. The designer has put in guns and aeroplanes, which (as was certified by United States Government officials after inspection) the Lusitania did not carry but has conveniently omitted to put in the women and children, which the world knows she did carry. - - "business above all" (Geschaft uber alles) the figure of Death sits at the booking office of the Cunard Line and gives out tickets to passengers, who refuse to attend to the warning against submarines given by a German. This picture seeks apparently to propound the theory that if a murderer warns his victim of his intention, the guilt of the crime will rest with the victim, not with the murderer. - Replicas of the medal are issued by the Lusitania Souvenir Medal Committee, 32 Duke Street, Manchester Square, W. 1. All profits accruing to the Committee will be handed to St. Dunstan's Blinded Soldiers and Sailors Hostel." |

Notes | "Imitation of the medal struck by Germany on the sinking of the "Lusitania". Souvenir medal published by the Lusitania Souvenir Medal Committee. It was a close copy in iron of German medal designed by Karl Goetz following the sinking of the Cunard Line vessel, Lusitania on 7 May 1915. The English medal issued as a propaganda and fundraising device - highlighting the intent of Germany to sink any vessel regardless of lives of passengers; and profits from sale were to go to the St Dunstan's Blinded Soldiers and Sailors Hostel. The Lusitania was torpedoed on 7 May while sailing off the Irish coast (en route from the USA to the UK) at a cost of 1198 lives lost. The date on the medal - 5 May 1915 - was believed to be proof that this was a pre-mediated and deliberate attack on a supposedly neutral passenger vessel. There is also considerable controversy about the actual cargo of the Cunard line vessel, and a suggestion that there was that the vessel did carry munitions etc, a deliberate ploy on the part of the shipowners to attract German retaliation, in order to draw the USA into the war. | |||||||||||||||||||||||
