Notes Medal commemorating the death of the Duke of Wellington, 1852 Arthur Wellesley, later the 1st Duke of Wellington, was considered as Britain's greatest military commander. His victories over the French in the Peninsular War of 1808-1814 and at Waterloo in 1815. Following his military career the Duke became a politician and was Prime Minister from 1828-1830. His death in 1852 was acknowledged with a state funeral, became an occasion for nation-wide mourning.
