Notes | Naval General Service Medal 1793-1840 with "Syria" clasp Medal warded to Mate William Horton, Royal Navy William Horton, born 1820, joined the Royal Navy on 7th December 1832. He received the Syria bar was awarded for action on 8th November 1840, during the second Egyptian-Ottoman War (also referred to as the Second Turko-Egyptian War). Horton was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 7th March 1842, and on 18th August 1855, during the Crimean War, he took up the position of Commander. He later became a captain, and retired from the Navy on 1st April 1860 with the rank “Retired Captain”. Subsequently he was appointed to the rank of Vice-Admiral (retired). Commander Horton's naval service is recorded at http-www.pdavis.nl-ShowBiog.php.id=970 (accessed 15.3.2014) From 9th August 1851 - Lieutenant Commander in Shearwater, Mediterranean From 1st October 1854 - Lieutenant Commander in Ardent, Mediterranean and Black Sea during the Russian War From 1st February 1856 to 11th December 1858- Commander in Curlew (until paying off at Plymouth), Mediterranean During the Crimean War Commander Horton was awarded the French Legion d’Honneur (Chevalier 5th Class). | |||||||||||||||||||||||
