Thompson, 6-8th Brigade, Royal Artillery silver medal; with one bar- KANDAHAR; plain swivelling suspender; with ribbon obverse- crowned and draped head of Queen Victoria with legend- VICTORIA REGINA ET IMPERATRIX reverse- a scene of troops on the march with an elephant carrying a gun in the centre; around the top is the word AFGHANISTAN, and in the exurgue the dates- 1878-79-80 ribbon- green with crimson stripes on edges named on edge- 3473. GUNR R. THOMPSON 6-8TH BDE R.A.

Thompson, 6-8th Brigade, Royal Artillery bar- Kandahar Kandahar 1st September 1880 General Roberts, with 10,000 men then advanced from Kabul to Kandahar and on 1st September attacked and defeated Ayub Khan. The Kandahar bar was awarded to those under Sir Frederick Roberts VC who engaged in the action on 1st September 1880 and also to those who had undertaken reconnaissance of the city the previous day,
