English: Merchant Marine Medal awarded to George Perks, WW1 bronze circular medal, 36mm diameter, straight fixed suspension, without ribbon; obverse- bareheaded effigy of King George V facing left, with the legend "GEORGIVS V BRITT- OMN- REX ET IND- IMP-" reverse- steamship ploughing through heavy seas, submarine sinking on portside and sailing ship in the background. The exergue is inscribed, "FOR•WAR•SERVICE - MERCANTILE•MARINE - •1914–1918•". Enclosing the image is a laurel wreath. name on edge (inscr rim)- G. PERKS.

Notes Mercantile Marine War Medal, awarded to George William Perks, Mercantile Marine, WW1 Born in Liverpool on 17.3.1899, George Perks was living in New Zealand in 1917 when he first enlisted with the Merchant Navy at the age of 15 years. He served a total of at least four years on New Zealand vessels between 1917 and 1922. His discharge certificates show that he was initially employed on HS Maheno as a Brass Boy from 12 January 1917 to 19 May 1917, having enlisted from Auckland at the age of 15 years.
