English: British War Medal 1914-20, WW1 Medal awarded to Lance-Corporal 76040 John William Cottle 40th Reinforcements, NZEF. circular silver medal; plain straight non-swivelling suspender; with ribbon obverse- coinage head of King George V with the legend- GEORGIUS V BRITT- OMN- REX ET IND- IMP- reverse- naked figure of St. George on horseback facing right; the horse is trampling on an eagle shield and cross bones symbolic of death; above the horse’s head is the sun, symbolic of victory; around the edge are the dates, 1914 and 1918 ribbon- a broad orange watered band down the centre, bordered with white, black and blue stripes named on edge- 76040 L-CPL. Notes British War Medal 1914-1918 Medal awarded to Lance-Corporal 76040 John William Cottle 40th Reinforcements, 1NZEF Lance Corporal John William Cottle died of disease en route to England on 4 September 1918. He was a member of the 40th Reinforcements E Company, sailing to England on HMNZT Tahiti. After calling in at Capetown this vessel was hit by the influenza epidemic, then prevalent in Capetown, and although no men were allowed ashore while in port, Tahiti was boarded by locals. Sixty five men aboard HMNZT 107 Tahiti, including John Cottle, died of disease in the first week of September 1918.
