Notes Naval General Service Medal 1793-1840 Medal awarded to William Smith, Royal Navy bar- Navarino, 20th October 1827 This bar was issued for the battle of Navarino in October 1827. This was a naval battle in which the combined fleets of Britain, France and Russia took part against the fleets of Turkey and Egypt. When the battle ended only three or four of the Turkish and Egyptian ships, numbering over eighty at the start of the battle, were left afloat.
