With bars for Cape Colony, Orange Free State and Transvaal. silver medal; three bars; plain straight swivelling suspender; with ribbon obverse- crowned and veiled head of Queen Victoria and legend VICTORIA REGINA ET IMPERATRIX reverse- Britannia with a flag in her left hand and holding out a laurel wreath in her right towards an advancing party of soldiers; in the background are two warships; below the wreath, in two lines- 1899-1900 in relief; around top- SOUTH AFRICA bars- CAPE COLONY - ORANGE FREE STATE - TRANSVAAL ribbon- red with two dark blue stripes and a broad orange central stripe medal named on edge- 422 PTE. Notes | Queen's South Africa Medal, 1899-1902 Medal awarded to 422 Pte. Charles Augustus Pollett, City of London Imperial Volunteers, Rifle Detachment (CIV). He received the following bars- Cape Colony 11th October 1899-31st May 1902 Orange Free State- 28th February 1900-31st May 1902 Transvaal 24th May 1900-31st May 1902 The City Imperial Volunteers was a regiment established in Great Britain to serve in South Africa. Charles Pollett (born 1871) was a member of the Rangers Detachment of the City Imperial Volunteers, holding the rank of Rifleman. He then transferred to the South African Constabulary holding the rank of Quarter-Master Sergeant. Charles Augustus Pollett later lived in Australia before moving to New Zealand where he served with the Home Guard during World War Two, receiving the New Zealand War Service Medal. | |||||||||||||||||||||||
