e trigonometricfunctions, or the solution of triangles by plane trigonometry, it is ex-pected that each student will lay out this lesson with great care, sothat the blank diameters of the gear and pinion may be obtained byscaling the pencil drawing. The various angles, as the turning andcutting angles and angle of edge, may be found in the same manner, using a protractor to measure the angles. Later, when the studenthas received some instruction in plane trigonometry, he will be requiredto calculate these diameters as well as the various angles given. The keyway is f inch wide by \ inch high in both gear and pinion. Note carefully the method of dimensioning these gears; the drafts-man must always keep in mind the needs of the pattern maker andmachinist in all his work. He should be familiar with the varioussliop operations of machining the pieces he illustrates, otherwise it israther difficult for him to dimension a drawing intelligently. ■ Blank Diameter k11) IQ i Q Pitch Diameter -

With this assumption in mind, the mainrequirement of the student is now to obtain sufficient practice, makingdetail and assembly drawings, to help him to become proficient inturning out rapidly work that is accurate, with the lettering and dimen-sioning done in a neat and attractive manner. No modern drafting room will send out blue prints of drawingsupon which the lettering has been poorly done, or the dimensions ofwhich are indistinct. Many a young draftsman has been refused em-ployment simply because he was a poor letterer. If the applicantssample drawing is neatly lettered and dimensioned, the chances aretliat h
