Summary
[edit]DescriptionMeaux Abbey Earthworks - geograph.org.uk - 1161484.jpg |
English: Meaux Abbey Earthworks, Meaux, East Riding of Yorkshire, England. Looking west-northwest across the southern end of the site from Meaux Road just north of Bridge Cottage. The Cistercian abbey of Meaux was founded in 1150 by William le Gros, Earl of Albermarle and Lord of Holderness, in lieu of a pilgrimage to the Holy Land. It was originally populated by a small band of monks from Fountains Abbey whose number had risen to sixty by 1249. In August 1349 the Black Death carried off twenty-two monks and six lay brethren and by the time it subsided there were only ten survivors from the congregation. The abbey was surrendered during the Dissolution on 11 December 1539 when it had a total net value of a little under £300. More information on Meaux Abbey can be found at British History Online. http://www.british-history.ac.uk/report.aspx?compid=36239 |
