Summary
[edit]DescriptionMeander-cutoff The-Rincon Meander-Core Colorado-River Utah-USA.jpg |
English: The “Rincon”, an entrenched and abandoned meander in the Glen Canyon, the riverbed of the Colorado River, Utah, USA. The meander is thought to have formed in several thousand years ago. The cut of the meander shortened the river by ca. 9,6 km (6 miles). The abandoned section, 3,4 x 2,7 km (2,1 x 1,6 miles) by size, eroded a 180 - 230 m (600 - 740 ft) high “butte”, a mountain form typical in the hot, arid climate of Utah. The canyons of the Colorado Plateau formed within the past 5 million years by vigorous downcutting of the Colorado River and its tributaries, exposing more than 3 km (10000 ft) of bedrock over ca. 300 million years. The bedrock units range in age from “Late Pennsylvanian” (300 million years) to “Late Cretaceous” (85 million years), recording a fascinating history of mostly shallow marine depositions. Contrary to the mountain building thrust of the Rocky Mountains the high, thick crustal block of Colorado Plateau formations were remarkably stable with relatively little rock deformation, such as faulting and folding. Prior to and during the forming of The Rincon Meander bedrocks in the area were subject to uplifting. This caused the Glen Canyon bottom to be drastically eroded deeper. Therefore The Rincon Meander fell slowly dry and was finally abandoned. |
