| Description |
English: Meadow near Norton Court. A small meadow being grazed by sheep, almost entirely surrounded by orchards. Traditionally, Kent farmers grew sheep in their widely planted orchards. The fruit crop was sold on the tree for the buyer to harvest and market while the land-owner concentrated on his sheep. This is rarely the case these days, the market for British wool has almost disappeared and the need to fence orchards to sheep-proof standards plus the available subsidies for other land use have lead to a decline in the practice. Modern orchards are also planted far more closely on dwarf root-stock. |
