Summary

[edit]
Description One of the odder juxtapositions along Main Street in my hometown of Sylva, North Carolina are the former dental offices and home of the McGuire family, whom were, for many years, the only dentists in the town. The buildings and house date to the period between 1900 and 1930, when the town was rapidly growing due to the establishment of the local tannery, connection to the Murphy Branch of the Western North Carolina (later Southern) Railroad, and the designation of Sylva as the county seat town in 1913, with the Jackson County government and courts moving from their previous home in nearby Webster. The McGuires thrived as the town grew, constructing a beautiful home along Main Street that was soon joined by two brick structures that housed their dental practice on the upper floors and retail spaces at ground level. The buildings originally appeared differently than they do today, with the one built of darker brick originally having a full third floor with a large meeting room in the front, which was lost when it collapsed during a snowstorm in 1960. The dental practice remained in the buildings until the 1970s or 1980s, when a new, modern dental practice building was built on King Street overlooking the town, and the buildings eventually were sold to The Sylva Herald, the local newspaper, whom now house their offices in the building. The house, meanwhile, was renovated circa 2002 and became a restaurant, with several different owners over the years, which took advantage of the courtyard in front to create an intimate dining experience. However, the last restaurant at the location closed many years ago, and, after a brief stint as an entertainment and events venue, as well as a dermatologist’s office, the house is now vacant and for sale.
