Summary

[edit]
Description

The Gargoyle was a US Navy air-to-surface missile intended to be launched by carrier-based aircraft against enemy shipping. It was powered by an Aerojet solid-fuel JATO bottle which only fired for eight seconds but delivered 1,000lb of thrust, allowing the Gargoyle to carry a 1,000lb warhead up to seven miles at speeds of up to 600mph. 200 were built between 1944 and 1947 but did not see active service and were used for testing and research. Originally designated as the LBD-1, it later became the KSD-1, then KUD-1 and finally the RTV-N-2 by the time the final ones were retired in 1950. This example was transferred to the Smithsonian Institute in 1974 from the National Armed Forces Advisory Board and is now part of the National Air and Space Museum. It is seen on display in the James S. McDonnell Space Hangar at the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center Washington Dulles International Airport, Chantilly, Virginia
