er ornaments at variouspoints. This kind of thing reached a climax of extrava-gance in the latter part of the seventeenth century, whenJ. Hardouin-Mansart constructed for Louis XIV thefamous labyrinth in the smaller park at Versailles. Thislabyrinth is described in a book, now very rare, entitledLabyrinte de Versailles, by C. Perrault, printed at theroyal press, Paris, in 1677, and illustrated by Sebastienle Clerc. Our illustrations, Figs. 88, 89, 90 and 91, areselected from the book in question and show respectivelythe plan of the labyrinth and three of the thirty-ninegroups of hydraulic statuary representing the fables ofAesop. At the entrance to the labyrinth were placedsymbolical statues of Aesop and Cupid, the latter holdingin one hand a ball of thread. Each of the speakingcharacters represented in the fable groups emitted ajet of water, representing speech, and each group was ii7 accompanied by an engraved plate displaying more orless appropriate verses by the poet de Benserade.
