| Description |
English: The Mayflower Apartments, 66 Summer Street (corner Linwood Avenue), Buffalo, New York, December 2019. Erected in 1929, this eight-story apartment building is faced in handsome tan brick and sports opulent terra cotta ornamentation in the Italian Renaissance style. Of especial note is the rich detail on the row of windows on the third floor: they sit on a band course decorated with dentils and terra cotta ornamentation, are surrounded by terra cotta rope molding, and are crowned variously with window heads in the form of broken pediments and with round arches whose tympanums are adorned with exquisite reliefs in glazed terra cotta. The main entrance is set back a considerable distance from Summer Street and features a grand front doorway topped with a round arch and a richly decorated tympanum, and framed by a pair of fluted Corinthian columns supporting a round pediment. The Corinthian motif is reinforced by the glazed terra cotta panels at each side of the doorway, decorated with images of acanthus leaves and urns. |
